Learning in the Third Age for Migrants and Refugees

This project is funded by the British Academy with the Researchers at Risk scheme for Ukrainian academics, and funds Dr Ievgeniia Dragomirova for three years from 2022-25. Her research in Glasgow and in Belfast will extend her previous interests in third age learning, and has a particular focus on older migrants who have recently entered the UK from places in crisis. A focus on adult education and migration fits very closely to two of the core themes of the School of Education (refugee and migrant education and adult education), and will contribute to the school's interests on how research and development can contribute to local development. Dr Dragomirova is mentored for this work by CR&DALL core member Professor Ellen Boeren.

Leverhulme Visiting Professorship - Nematollah Azizi

This visiting professorship funded by the Leverhulme Trust consists a one-year programme of work being undertaken by Professor Nematollah Azizi from the University of Kurdistan under the supervision of Professor Michael Osborne, Director of CR&DALL.

The core aim of the programme is to enhance understanding of how universities can better contribute to sustainable economic, social and cultural development of their host cities through analysis of distinct approaches that have been taken in Iran in the context of Islamic thinking around culture and spirituality, identifying practices that are transferable to the UK. By contrast, the programme also seeks to explore potentially transferability of practices from the UK to Iran.

The specific objectives are as follows:

  • To examine the factors within universities that lead to successful knowledge exchange between universities and cities, in both Iran and the UK aligning these to the localisation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the influence of:
    • national and regional policy frameworks;
    • economically and socially driven performance targets o culture and spirituality;
    • university and urban structures for leadership;
    • the embeddedness of service to local communities within learning programmes;
    • mechanisms to promote engagement.
  • There will be particular attention given to what can be learnt and practiced by university academics, students and administrators at the University of Glasgow as they strive for more effective knowledge exchange with urban communities through assessing principles of teaching and learning, and of engagement from an Islamic perspective;
  • There will be a particular effort given to approaches that will enhance engagement with Muslim communities in Glasgow, and that will make contributions to the university’s efforts in decolonialising the curriculum. Contributions will also be made to similar endeavours in community engaged research in other nations of the UK.

Lessons learnt from UK practices will be analysed for potential transfer to Iran. It is funded by the Leverhulme Trust with £138,625.

Special Issue of Education and Training

My colleagues (Dr Saikat Maitra, Indian Institute of Management Kolkata, India; Prof. Dr. Matthias Pilz, Univ. of Cologne, Germany) are editing a special issue of the journal, Educationa and Training, entitled, 'Not in high regard: an exploration of low reputation of vocational education in the Global South'.

This special issue will explore a comparative analysis of the factors behind the lower reputation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the Global South.

It will support educators in examining and articulating their vision for refugee language education through providing connections and opportunities for discussion with refugees and those working with refugees in their own and other contexts, including host communities.

Learning for Informal Language Educators in Refugee Settings in Lebanon and Jordan. A pilot study.

This project investigates the role of informal language educators working in refugee settings in Lebanon and Jordan, and pilot ways of co-creating professional development with the language educators themselves, nurturing agency. It will support educators in examining and articulating their vision for refugee language education through providing connections and opportunities for discussion with refugees and those working with refugees in their own and other contexts, including host communities. 

The language learning needs of refugees in Jordan and Lebanon are supported by teachers in formal, non-formal and informal settings. Teacher development can be lacking or inconsistent, particularly for teachers in informal contexts, even though informal education is key to education in emergency, when formal education is disrupted. These teachers are often working through initiatives run by local or international NGOs which are timebound and donor-dependent, and may be in a transitory position themselves, resulting in lack of continuity and shared learning, and in few opportunities to have a say in how they develop as teachers and achieve their aspirations or to contribute to longer-term planning.

This is a key challenge in refugee education and for education in contexts of emergency and crisis more widely. 

This pilot will allow to: 

(a) collect pilot data on the scope and nature of local challenges in Lebanon and Jordan; 

(b) explore new ways of co-creating teacher professional development through participatory and decolonising approaches which strengthen educators’ agency and identity; and, 

(c) establish relationships in Lebanon and Jordan that will help to ensure collaboration and co-creation of knowledge with Global South partners working in challenging contexts. 

The project is funded internally within the University of Glasgow through the Glasgow Centre for International Developmentsmall grants scheme with £19,761 from January to June 2023.

 The PI is Maria Grazia Imperiale and the Co-Is are Dr Giovanna Fassetta and Damian Ross.
